  • Comments: Uncertified, legible photocopy of (microfilmed?) document titled "Abstract of Wills and Administrations" mailed in the summer of 1996 to the author from Mrs. Marion Springer of Steuben County Clerk's Office. Hendershott, a quarter of a century ago one of the leading educators and most prominent citizens of this community, died this afternoon shortly after two o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ezra Lawrence No. 241 Grand street. He had been in poor health for some time and it has been known for several days that he could not survive long. Prof. Hendershott was 78 years of age. He was a brother of the late Samuel Hendershott who settled near Glenwood. Mr. Hendershott was a well educated man and first came into prominence when he became the principal of the Lincoln School. For fourteen years he held that position and attained a reputation as a deep thinker and public spirited man. He was an industrious and voluminous writer and newspaper correspondent on sociological and political subjects. He was deeply interested in all affairs of the country from a patriotic and historical standpoint. The earlier residents of this city and vicinity obtained their education from him and all still hold him in the deepest respect and veneration. He was a teacher of the old fashioned school and in the rudiments and fundamentals of sound education his scholars were all well grounded. For the past twenty-five years he had not been engaged in active pursuits but was still engaged in his studies. He is survived by his wife and three children Mrs. George Lewis, of Dansville and Mrs. Ezra Lawrence of this city and Carl S. Hendershott of Waverly, Minn. No funeral arrangements have yet been made.".
